Don’t Be the Weak Link: Why Security is Everyone’s Job

Tue, 2019-05-21 18:58
CXOTalk with Oracle’s Mark Sunday

While security may start from the top, it doesn’t end there. In today’s business environment, it’s everyone’s job to remain vigilant and stay on top of the latest security trends. Oracle’s CIO, Mark Sunday, shares his wisdom and advice on security, what it means today, and why it matters more than ever in his latest CXOTalk interview with industry analyst and host, Michael Krigsman.

Here are few quick takeaways from Sunday’s conversation with Krigsman:

Regardless of the Industry, Security Is Top of Mind and a Key Focus

Security has always been a major issue, but with the high-profile breaches that have become more and more prevalent, security, now more than ever, should be top of mind. Every business, regardless of the industry needs to be concerned about security. You want to ensure that your customers and your employees’ data are protected.

It Begins at the Very Top

Security starts at the top. Sunday believes it’s the responsibility of the company’s leadership to create a culture of security and to ensure the right regulations are in place.

Security Is Not Just the Role of the CIO, Not Just the Role of the CISO, but It’s Everyone's Responsibility

Even though security starts from the top, it should not stop there. Sunday stresses the importance of security at every layer. Every layer in the organization and every layer of the business. Security should affect almost all roles within the organization. One weak link can break the chain.

Watch the CXOTalk with Mark Sunday to hear more on his approach to security.

You Won’t Believe What Today’s Biggest Security Threat Is

Thu, 2019-05-16 15:09
CXOTALK with Praxair’s Earl Newsome

We often think of cyber security as solely the function of the IT department. But the truth is that security is the responsibility of each and every one of us—as we discover how to navigate an increasingly digital, mobile, and social infoscape. IT security has broken out of the realm of the technical experts and is integrating into everyone's job and day-to-day life.

In this CXOTalk video, Earl Newsome, Praxair Vice President and Chief Information Officer, sits down with industry analyst and CXOTALK host, Michael Krigsman, to discuss the importance of IT security across an entire organization.

People are the Biggest Threat to Security

The fact remains that traditional technical solutions—firewalls, permissions, encryption—help prevent data loss and theft. However, modern attacks now occur on multiple levels and are no longer completely technical. Cybercriminals are now using your own employees against your security defenses—without them even knowing.

The unfortunate truth is that people represent the biggest threat to corporate security. “Most of the issues that happen in security happen on two legs, not on two wires. [First] we need to do what's necessary on the two wires side—technology—and make sure that we have the right monitoring, detection, and patching capabilities put in place,” says Newsome.

Security is Everyone’s Responsibility

However, security doesn’t stop there. Training, awareness, and preparation must be an integral part of your security program in order to prevent security threats from within. “Security is not just the job of IT or our vendors, it’s actually the job of the board, it’s the job of our employees–security is everyone’s job,” says Newsome.

Your organization could be armed with the most impenetrable technical security defense—but at the end of the day, your organization is only as secure as your employees.

Watch the CXOTALK video to discover how to ensure security is implemented at every level of your organization.

Don’t Leave the Window Open: Four Recommendations to Stay Secure in an Interconnected World

Tue, 2019-04-30 17:47
Protect Your IT Like You Would Protect Your Home

In our rapidly evolving world of IT, cyber threats, cybercrime, and data breaches are becoming an everyday occurrence. Now security threats are more prevalent and familiar to businesses of all sizes. Add in the infinite array of interconnected devices and systems all around us, and suddenly you are faced with the challenge of managing potential threats from all angles – whether it’s a mobile device or an app, an employee with remote access, or someone plugging a USB drive into your network. Boom—you’ve been hit faster than you can blink.

Don’t worry—there are ways you can fight this tide, stay ahead of the wave, and keep your business and systems secure. In the recent podcast episode of Support Matters, experts Susan Behn of Infosemantics and Oracle’s Lisa Schreiber discuss their top recommendations and strategies to tackle this major IT challenge:

  1. Have a patching strategy and schedule—and stick to it

“Many of the well-published breaches are the result of lax security patching,” says Susan. Having a sound strategy, maintaining timely patches, and keeping up-to-date should be top priorities. “You have to absolutely make time to do it!”

Leverage Oracle Support resources to make sure your applications are fully secure at every layer.

  1. Subscribe to alerts for patches

Don’t let hackers find an opening. Susan recommends working with Oracle Technology Network and My Oracle Support to keep up-to-date so you never miss a patch.

  1. Educate your company

Security affects every person at your company. Vulnerabilities can occur anywhere, like employee’s cellphones, Wi-Fi connections, and internet browsers. The reality is that it is everyone’s job to stay secure. Create a security culture within your company. Make it a priority to educate everyone on potential areas of risk, how the most ordinary actions can pose threats, and the steps and latest protocols to combat them.

  1. Be proactive

Above all else, take a proactive approach when it comes to security. Stay on top of your business, run My Oracle Support diagnostic reports, and use patch wizards. Find holes and fix them before it's too late.

According to Lisa, you should think about protecting your IT and business like you would for your own home. “Think of it as a house that may have one open window. A burglar tries all the windows to find the one that is open. In this case, companies that do not patch have the same unlocked window.”

You must take steps to close the window. With Oracle’s cybersecurity strategy and the help of Oracle Support, you can keep your business secure.

Listen to the latest episode of Support Matters to learn more on how to fully protect your business.

Protect Your Mission-Critical Environments and Resources

Oracle is committed to protect your investment in Oracle Solaris and is mindful of your mission-critical environments and resources. Since January 2017, Oracle Solaris 11 follows a Continuous Delivery model[1], delivering new functionality as updates to the existing release. This means you are not required to upgrade to gain access to new features and capabilities. Oracle Support provides support for Oracle Solaris 11 through at least 2031 under Oracle Premier Support and Extended Support through 2034. These dates will be evaluated annually for updates.

With no additional cost, Oracle Solaris 11 customers under Oracle Premier Support can benefit from:

  • New features, bug fixes, and security vulnerability updates through both dot releases, and monthly Support Repository Updates (SRUs).
  • Binary Application Guarantee—guaranteed compatibility of your application from one Oracle Solaris release to the next, on premises or in the cloud.
  • 24/7 access via My Oracle Support to:
    • Oracle systems specialists
    • Online knowledge articles

Insights into IT Governance and Security

Mon, 2019-03-18 11:52
CXOTALK with Oracle’s Brennan Baybeck

Businesses continue to expand their digital footprint while cyber risks are rapidly increasing in quantity and complexity. Which is why it’s more important than ever to embed security solutions and IT governance processes into the fabric of your business—to protect your digital assets, customers, and your bottom line.

As an IT professional, you should make it a priority to understand how these crucial relationships, combined with ongoing support from a trusted source, can help you develop a solid IT governance program to protect your business now and in the future.

Good Governance Program

“Having a good governance program gives you many benefits,” says Oracle’s Vice President of Global IT Risk Management Brennan Baybeck. “The first one is protecting the business and the critical assets of that business. One of the main critical assets is the data. Good governance also helps drive compliance with contractual requirements with customers [and] regulatory compliance with regulators.”

Brennan continues, “additionally, it also helps with ensuring that the various components of your security program are covered, whether it's security operations, change management, configuration management, patching, or threat intelligence.”

Hear from Brennan Baybeck, Oracle VP Global, IT Risk Management

In this short CXOTALK, Baybeck and industry analyst and CXOTALK host, Michael Krigsman further explore why having a strong security governance program is absolutely essential for all businesses today. Including:

  • What is excellent security
  • Top three benefits of a strong security governance program
  • Security measures you need to think about for the future
  • Best practices for managing threats and vulnerabilities
  • The growing role of governance and risk management in DevOps

  • Customers on Siebel CRM 17 and higher will receive monthly updates.

What is Trusted Support? CXOTALK with Oracle VP Brennan Baybeck

Fri, 2019-03-01 14:36

Why Every Business Needs Trusted Support

You must understand what trusted support is and why it matters to your business. Listen to Brennan Baybeck, Oracle VP Global IT Risk Management, as he talks to industry analyst and CXOTALK host, Michael Krigsman, about the value of trusted support and why it’s a crucial component in good IT governance structure of an organization.

The increasing security threats and vulnerabilities faced by organizations every day have created a need for companies to think about security at every level of their organization. This includes the ability to keep systems maintained, updated, configured, and patched.

Security is in the Source Code

Oracle Support fuels your business innovation and gives you important support and security updates for your Oracle products. Only Oracle can provide key security enhancements to the software itself and more comprehensive protection against new hacking threats. Third-party support providers don’t have access to Oracle’s software code, where critical updates, including patches, are made. Instead, third-party providers offer incomplete approaches as a poor alternative to robust security.

When it comes down to it, companies should look at all available options and invest in support partnerships that not only provide the tools and support they need, but also protect their software and IT investment.

“Having a trusted support partner that owns the source code is very important because they’re the ones that understand all of the intricacies of their products and give you the tools, automation, and technology to patch those effectively,” says Baybeck.

Organizations looking to develop a successful long-term governance strategy cannot sacrifice security. They should be working with a trusted partner that provides true security patching, proactive maintenance, and comprehensive support.

“Remember, don’t think you can do everything on your own,” Baybeck says.

Watch the CXOTALK to learn more about why trusted support is crucial for all enterprise software—whether on premises or in the cloud.

Oracle E-Business Suite and Applications Unlimited Continued Oracle Investment—No Upgrades

Wed, 2019-02-06 13:13
Continued Oracle Investment for Years to Come

In June 2018, Oracle published the “Applications and Support—an Unbeatable Combination” announcement. This message re-affirmed Oracle’s commitment to the Applications Unlimited products with continuing development and support through at least 2030. The products covered by  Applications Unlimited are Oracle E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, and Siebel.

The June announcement committed Oracle E-Business Suite Development to move to the continuous innovation release model for the next major release (identified as 12.X), as explained in the Oracle E-Business Suite publication.

  Continuous Innovation Release Announced

In the subsequent October 2018 announcement, Oracle E-Business Suite announced that we will implement continuous innovation on the current 12.2 release.

Significance to Oracle E-Business Suite Customers

This is important to Oracle E-Business Suite customers because the announcement:

  • Restates Oracle’s commitment to Oracle E-Business Suite.
  • Clarifies that the inter-dependency of the applications and technology stack has been uncoupled, and it will be possible to perform “tools only” updates (affecting the application layer), without being forced to update the technology stack at the same time, or conversely, tech stack updates without updating the applications.
  • Means it will be easier for customers to remain current—on the continuous innovation release—and benefit from the latest developments.
  • Removes the justification for 12.1.3 users to delay upgrading, as once they have migrated to 12.2, they can remain on that release for at least through 2030.
  • Sets the record straight—responding to/countering some of the misinformation and rumors, which have been circulated, stating that Oracle E-Business Suite will not be developed or supported.

Oracle Applications Unlimited

With continuous innovation now available for Oracle E-Business Suite 12.2, Oracle E-Business Suite joins the other Applications Unlimited products that also have pledged to provide continuous innovation and Oracle Premier Support through at least 2030 for their current continuous innovation releases.

How Can You Protect Your Business From Cybercrime?

Wed, 2018-12-12 19:15
Cybercrime is Real.

By 2021, the estimated annual cost of worldwide cybercrime damages will be $6 trillion[1]. You’ve seen the headlines—the average cost of a data breach in 2016 was $4 million[2]—many companies never recover.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security advises, “It is necessary for all organizations to establish a strong ongoing patch management process to ensure the proper preventative measures are taken against potential threats[3].”

Oracle continues to periodically receive reports of attempts to maliciously exploit vulnerabilities for which Oracle has already released fixes. In some instances, it has been reported that attackers have been successful because targeted customers had failed to apply available Oracle patches. Oracle therefore strongly recommends that customers remain on actively-supported versions and apply Critical Patch Update fixes without delay[4].

Support Matters.

Oracle Support is the best way to legally receive mission critical security updates and protection for your Oracle Software. Because Oracle creates and owns the source code, we can address vulnerabilities and emerging threats in the source code. As an Oracle Premier Support customer you have access reliable quarterly Critical Patch Updates to the source and security bulletins.

When your business is on the line, there is no substitute for trusted, secure, and comprehensive

See why Oracle recommends patching to fix software vulnerabilities at the source on Oracle Forbes BrandVoice and read more on the importance of software patching to avoid data breaches.

Don’t become a cybercrime statistic.
